Officer responding to a call was killed in an ambush the night before Mother’s Day, suspect found dead, police said

EUCLID, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) – A police officer in Ohio was shot and killed after being dispatched to a “disturbance” Saturday night, according to officials.

The Euclid Police Department said Officer Jacob Derbin was called to a location just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

While investigating the crime scene, Derbin was ambushed and shot, the release said.

According to WOIO, Derbin was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

During a news conference Sunday, Euclid police said the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was found dead in a home this afternoon.

Previously, the Shaker Heights Police Department had ordered residents to be sheltered in place during a SWAT situation.

WOIO reports that the Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to the scene of a “critical officer-involved incident” and the sounds of possible gunfire and stun grenades were heard before news crews were told to leave.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office said Derbin has been with the department for less than a year.

“The Pledge of Protection is signed with the blood of our officers,” Ohio Attorney General David Yost said in a statement. “The murderer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and receive the full measure of justice.”

“It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day and that this murder occurred just as we are preparing to commemorate our fallen during Police Memorial Week. My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.”

Euclid police and several other agencies are searching for the suspect.

“The Euclid Police Department asks that you keep the fallen officer, his family, loved ones and our agency in your thoughts and prayers,” a police statement said.

Officials said further details would be released “as appropriate.”

Euclid Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail released a statement Sunday saying Derbin’s death was a call for the community to come together in solidarity and support.

“Let us unite in remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifice made and vow to uphold the values of compassion, resilience and community spirit that this devastating loss so powerfully reminds us,” the statement reads in part.
