Ex-METI bureaucrat sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug abuse and raping women

The Tokyo District Court on Monday sentenced a former Industry Ministry official to 10 years in prison for drugging six women with sleeping pills and then raping or groping them in 2022.

Dai Sato, a 34-year-old former official in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, gave six women in Tokyo a drink laced with sleeping pills to make them unable to resist his advances, then sexually assaulted them in a hotel or an Internet cafe, said the verdict.

He raped two of them, but his attempts to have sex with the other four failed because they were too drunk for sex or for other reasons, it said. Instead, he groped her or ejaculated into the victim’s underwear.
